FORM FOLLOWS ART
Might we suggest a nice Gio Ponti to go with your Gursky?
If great art, plenty of parties and warm weather are not enough, there is now another excuse to steal a weekend in Miami in early December: Design.05 Miami, which launches this season in collaboration with the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The organizers Ambra Medda and Amy Lau, hoping to tap into the booming crossover clientele who are as into Prouvť as they are into Prince, have courted the cream of the international design galleries to install vignettes and curate mini-shows at the historic Moore Building. "Design is becoming more fashionable to collect," Medda says. Barry Friedman Ltd. from New York, David Gill Gallery from London (it's showing Mattia Bonetti's 2004 Volcano Tables, above) and Contrasts from Shanghai round out a liberal A-list design curriculum, from postwar French to contemporary Chinese. Zaha Hadid, the inaugural "Designer of the Year" for Design.05, is creating a site-specific architectural installation to mark the event. (Design.05 Miami, Dec. 1-5, 2005. Moore Building, 191 NE 40th Street, Miami Beach, Fla.)
