Fine glass from Murano has been cherished by collectors since 1291, when Venice banished its glassmakers to this neighboring island to prevent fires. By the 1960s and 1970s, the exclusive Murano maker, Creaciones Gobesso, was producing work in the spirit of iconoclastic French artist Line Vautrin, whose creations brought bolder, rough-finished designs. Thus Gobesso’s collection of glass boxes and mirrors takes a definitively Brutalistic tone. Here, outsize chunks of colorful handblown glass are studded into the mirror's resin frame, which displays a ruggedly scored, oxidized patina.
